Breaking: Mark Kellogg Lands Another Major Transfer as Carter McCray Commits to WVU…
April 29, 2025 โ Morgantown, WV โ West Virginia womenโs basketball head coach Mark Kellogg has struck again in the transfer portal, securing a major commitment in Carter McCray, one of the most sought-after backcourt players available this offseason. McCrayโs decision to join the Mountaineers signals Kelloggโs continued momentum in reshaping WVUโs roster into a national contender.
McCray, a 5-foot-10 combo guard, spent the past two seasons at Illinois State, where she emerged as a dynamic scorer and tenacious defender. She averaged 16.3 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.1 steals per game last season, earning first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference honors. Known for her explosive first step and ability to impact both ends of the floor, McCray will bring immediate experience and energy to the Mountaineersโ backcourt.
โI chose West Virginia because I believe in Coach Kelloggโs vision,โ McCray said in a statement on social media. โThe culture heโs building is something I want to be part of, and Iโm ready to help this team compete at the highest level.โ
McCray is the third transfer Kellogg has added this offseason, joining former SEC standout forward Laila James and sharpshooting wing Taylor Monroe from the Pac-12. With these additions, WVU continues to add depth, versatility, and experience to a team that made a strong run to the NCAA Tournament Second Round last season.
Kellogg, who just wrapped up his first season at the helm in Morgantown, has quickly made a name for himself on the recruiting trail. After building a successful program at Stephen F. Austin and then Texas Tech, heโs brought a fast-paced, high-pressure system that has resonated with both returning players and new talent.
โCarter is a perfect fit for how we want to play,โ Kellogg said in a press release. โSheโs tough, skilled, and incredibly driven. Her ability to create plays and defend at a high level will elevate our team in so many ways. Weโre thrilled to have her in the Gold and Blue.โ
McCrayโs arrival also addresses a key need for the Mountaineers, who graduated veteran point guard Madisen Smith this offseason. With McCray stepping into that leadership role, sheโs expected to be a foundational piece for WVU’s 2025-26 campaign.
Fans and analysts alike are already taking notice of the programโs offseason moves. With a core of returning players like Jordyn Yearwood and Savannah Samuel, and the incoming transfer talent, WVU is poised to climb even higher in the Big 12 standings.
As Kellogg continues to leverage the transfer portal to build a championship-caliber roster, the excitement around the program only continues to grow.
