Tennis stars Jack Draper, Taylor Fritz, and Ben Shelton recently revealed their unexpected choices for the ATP pros they’d depend on most in an emergency. Their diverse picks, ranging from Novak Djokovic to Tommy Paul, each came with unique reasoning.
Ahead of the Queen’s Club Championships, where all three top 10 players competed, they participated in a media interview. The trio and a few other players were asked to name their most reliable peers in a hypothetical “emergency” scenario.
Emergency Alliances on the ATP Tour
Jack Draper gave a well-considered answer, stating he’d call upon Novak Djokovic. Draper believes Djokovic’s extensive network of contacts and his calm, unshakeable demeanor would be invaluable in getting him out of any tricky situation. “I need someone with a lot of contacts. I’d say Novak Djokovic, I feel like he’d have a lot of contacts and I feel like nothing phases that guy,” Draper explained at Queen’s Club in a video shared by BBC Sport.
Taylor Fritz, on the other hand, indicated he’d rely on his good friend Tommy Paul if a dire situation arose. Fritz cited Paul’s highly responsive nature as the key reason for his choice. “I think I’d call Tommy, I feel like he’d take it seriously, he’s pretty responsive, I feel like he’d have my back,” Fritz commented.
Ben Shelton made a rather unconventional pick, straying from the usual top-ranked players. He chose the towering, big-serving Reilly Opelka as his go-to in an emergency. Shelton noted Opelka’s quick response time, numerous connections, and willingness to help as his reasoning. “Reilly Opelka, I think he’d be quickest to respond and he’s got a lot of connections. The most willing to help me out,” Shelton stated.
