COLUMBIA — South Carolina forward Ashlyn Watkins is stepping away from basketball for the 2025-26 season and won’t suit up for coach Dawn Staley’s squad.
The 6-foot-3 forward, who has one year of eligibility left, shared on July 25 via social media that she’s taking a break to focus on her personal well-being.
“This past year has been a roller coaster,” Watkins wrote. “I’m usually a private person, but I’ve felt so much support from the community that I wanted to share a bit of what I’ve been going through. I also want younger girls who look up to me to understand that hardships don’t define you, they make you stronger.”
She said she’ll spend this year focusing on herself, her faith, family, and community, and plans to return stronger for the 2026-27 season. “I’m grateful for my coaches, teammates, the USC medical staff, and everyone who’s been by my side. I’ll be cheering for my team and working toward a comeback.”
Watkins tore her ACL during a game against Mississippi State on Jan. 5, ending her season early. She didn’t participate in June workouts and wasn’t expected to be ready for the start of the upcoming season.
Coach Staley voiced full support for Watkins, telling The Greenville News: “We value every member of this program beyond what they contribute on the court. Ashlyn has our full support as she strengthens both mentally and physically, and we’ll be ready to welcome her back when she’s ready.”
Watkins faced legal troubles last August when she was arrested for assault and kidnapping charges, which led to a temporary suspension from the team. She rejoined the team on Nov. 8 after completing a pretrial intervention program, and the charges were dismissed.
She returned to action on Nov. 10 versus NC State and went on to appear in 14 games last season, averaging 7.2 points and 6.1 rebounds. One highlight included a dunk against TCU on Dec. 8.
While the Gamecocks reached the national title game without her, Watkins’ rebounding and defensive presence were missed at times. Even though coach Staley has strong post players like Joyce Edwards, Chloe Kitts, Madina Okot, Adhel Tac, and Maryam Dauda, Watkins’ experience and athleticism would have been a key asset.
As a sophomore in 2023-24, Watkins averaged 9.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks across 20.6 minutes per game. She grabbed 280 total rebounds, including 18 double-digit rebound games, and set a personal best with 20 boards in the 2024 Final Four against NC State.
