Former tennis star Andrea Petkovic compared Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek to ATP standouts Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, asserting that the two dominate the WTA Tour in a similar way. However, she excluded Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula from that elite tier. The comments followed the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, where Swiatek claimed the women’s title and Sinner captured his first Wimbledon crown.
Petkovic, who reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2014, retired in 2022 but has remained involved in the tennis world. She now shares her perspectives on the sport via Substack and co-hosts a podcast with Boris Becker.
Reflecting on the Wimbledon results, Petkovic praised Swiatek and Sabalenka as the WTA’s top two talents and likened them to the dominant young men’s duo of Sinner and Alcaraz. Still, she noted a key difference: inconsistency. Unlike the men who have claimed the last seven Grand Slam titles between them Petkovic pointed out that the top women haven’t been as steady in their performances.
“I’ve said it often Sabalenka and Swiatek are the best two players in the world,” Petkovic said. “They’re like Sinner and Alcaraz. But they haven’t shown the same consistency at the Grand Slams. Players like Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula can beat them here and there, which doesn’t happen as often in the men’s game. But when everyone’s at their peak, Aryna and Iga are clearly ahead of the rest.”
Despite being a strong contender for the Wimbledon title, Sabalenka was defeated by Amanda Anisimova, who went on to win the tournament. Petkovic’s comments emphasized her belief that while others can occasionally challenge, Swiatek and Sabalenka still set the bar in women’s tennis.
