Arsenal close in on signing of talented Sweden right-back Smilla Holmberg.

Arsenal are reportedly close to finalizing the signing of 19-year-old Swedish right-back Smilla Holmberg from Hammarby, with only a few formalities left before the deal becomes official.

Holmberg, who represented Sweden at Euro 2025, gained attention after missing a crucial penalty in the quarter-final shootout against England. Despite that setback, her strong performances for both club and country have made her one of Europe’s most sought-after young defenders.

Hammarby’s CEO Richard von Yxkull confirmed that there is significant interest in the player but stressed that Holmberg remains focused on her current team and national duties. “It’s no secret Smilla has a lot of interest around her. For now, her focus is on Hammarby and the national team,” he told Sportbladet.

Holmberg has had a breakout year in Sweden’s top division, earning a regular spot in the national team and recognition on the prestigious “Golden Girl” list, highlighting the best young female talents in football. She has made 64 league appearances, scored eight goals, and already earned seven senior caps, scoring once for Sweden.

If the deal goes through, Holmberg will join Arsenal when the January transfer window opens. She is expected to compete with Emily Fox for the right-back position, adding strength and depth to the Gunners’ defense.

Arsenal had previously attempted to sign her in the summer, proposing that she remain at Hammarby until winter, but the Swedish club opted to keep her through the season. Holmberg remains under contract until 2026, giving Hammarby a solid position in negotiations.

Following her Euro 2025 penalty miss, Holmberg received an outpouring of support, including a personal message from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Her father shared that “she was very upset after the match, but she received a lot of love and even a text from Zlatan the next morning.

The young defender now looks set for a major step in her career, as Arsenal prepare to bring another rising star into their ranks this January.
