‘I’m Not Really a People Person’ – Why Kishane Thompson Prefers Not to Be as Outgoing as American Rival Noah Lyles

Jamaican sprint star Kishane Thompson has risen to prominence on the track over the past year, but away from the spotlight, he prefers to keep things understated.

In stark contrast to his American counterpart Noah Lyles, who embraces media attention and thrives in the limelight, Thompson takes a more reserved path. Despite the high-profile nature of elite athletics, he leans into his naturally introverted personality.

Speaking to Omilla Sports after clocking a sizzling 9.88 seconds to win the 100m at the 2025 Racers Grand Prix, Thompson reflected on the challenges of living in the public eye.

“I’m not really a people person,” he shared, making it clear that while he’s not opposed to engaging with fans, he prefers to remain low-key.

“Honestly, I can’t really move around freely. Most of the time, if I’m going somewhere public, I just have to move quickly and keep it stepping. I’m usually in my glasses or wearing a hat. But it is what it is it comes with the territory.”

Despite his preference for privacy, Thompson recognizes the necessity of dealing with the media. In a separate interview following his win, he explained his approach.

“It’s part of the job, so I have to know how to handle the media,” he said. He takes pride in being articulate and thoughtful during interviews.

“I think I’m a very articulate person, so that helps me put interviews together. When people ask me questions, I think I’m kind of well-spoken in interviews. But that’s just who I am.”

Two Different Personalities

Thompson’s understated demeanor is a notable contrast to Lyles, who is known for his charisma, animated celebrations, and love for crowd interaction. Lyles openly enjoys being an entertainer and making bold public statements.

Thompson, meanwhile, is content to let his times do the talking. He prioritizes performance over theatrics, focusing on precision and personal growth.

Finding the right balance between public responsibility and personal boundaries is key for Thompson. He understands that fame comes with trade-offs but remains firm in preserving his sense of self.

His quieter presence doesn’t diminish his achievements it defines the way he handles the demands of top-tier athletics.

As Thompson continues his rise in the sprinting world, his composed demeanor and unwavering work ethic set him apart. While he may not draw as much attention as Lyles off the track, his exceptional performances make sure his name stays in the headlines.
