JUST IN: Forty-Five Mountaineers Have Been Selected to the 2025 Winter Academic All-Big 12 Team…
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Big 12 Conference has officially announced the 2025 Winter Academic All-Big 12 Team selections, and West Virginia University (WVU) proudly placed 45 Mountaineer student-athletes on the prestigious list. This marks another year of academic excellence for the university’s athletic department, highlighting the commitment of its athletes both in competition and in the classroom.
The Academic All-Big 12 Team recognizes student-athletes who have achieved outstanding academic performance while participating in winter sports. Honorees must maintain a minimum 3.00 GPA either cumulatively or during the previous two semesters and must have participated in at least 20 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. First-team selections have GPAs of 3.20 or higher.
Of the 45 Mountaineers honored, 38 were named to the First Team, showcasing a high level of academic achievement across various sports including men’s and women’s basketball, wrestling, swimming & diving, and gymnastics. The remaining seven received Second Team honors, demonstrating consistency and dedication to their studies.
WVU Director of Athletics Wren Baker commended the student-athletes for their hard work and discipline: “We are incredibly proud of these young men and women. Balancing the demands of college athletics with rigorous academic standards is no easy feat, and this recognition reflects their exceptional time management, determination, and character.”
The women’s swimming and diving team led the way for WVU, contributing a substantial number of honorees. The gymnastics and wrestling teams also saw strong representation, reinforcing WVU’s reputation for fostering scholar-athletes across its athletic programs.
Academic support staff at West Virginia University have played a key role in the continued success of Mountaineer athletes. Through mentoring programs, tutoring, and structured study sessions, student-athletes are equipped with the resources they need to thrive academically.
“Being a student-athlete comes with intense challenges,” said a WVU academic advisor. “It’s amazing to see how these individuals rise to the occasion, not just athletically, but intellectually as well. They are true representatives of the Mountaineer spirit.”
In addition to academic accolades, many of the student-athletes recognized are leaders in their teams, often balancing academic loads with travel, training, and competition schedules. Their inclusion on the Academic All-Big 12 Team stands as a testament to their perseverance and commitment to long-term success both on and off the field.
The announcement adds to WVU’s tradition of excellence within the Big 12 Conference. As the university continues to invest in both academic and athletic development, the 2025 Winter Academic All-Big 12 selections serve as a proud reminder of what Mountaineers can achieve when given the support and opportunity to succeed.
With another successful winter season behind them, these 45 student-athletes are poised to continue setting the standard for excellence at WVU — not only through their athletic endeavors but also through their academic achievements.
