July 30, 2024 | Pittsburgh, PA — The highly anticipated men’s basketball Backyard Brawl between West Virginia University (WVU) and the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is scheduled for Friday, November 15, 2024, at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh.
This rivalry, one of the most storied in college athletics, will mark the 191st meeting between the two teams since their first encounter in 1906. The series was renewed in 2017 after a five-year hiatus following conference realignment, and the 2024 matchup is part of a four-year extension announced earlier this year.
The 2023 edition of the Backyard Brawl saw Pitt defeat WVU 80-63 at the WVU Coliseum, ending a six-game losing streak to the Mountaineers. Blake Hinson led the Panthers with a standout performance, scoring 29 points and setting a school record with nine three-pointers. Carlton Carrington added 16 points and nine assists, while Guillermo Diaz Graham contributed 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
WVU currently leads the all-time series 103-89. ([WV Sports Now][5])
The 2024 game will be the first Backyard Brawl under new WVU head coach Darian DeVries. Interim head coach Josh Eilert, who has been with the program for 17 of these games, expressed enthusiasm about the rivalry’s continuation. “The Backyard Brawl is great for both schools, the fanbases, and especially for college basketball,” Eilert said. “Without question, they are our biggest rival.”
Pitt head coach Jeff Capel also welcomed the extension of the series, emphasizing its significance to both teams and their supporters. “These kinds of games are what make college athletics so special,” Capel remarked. “We are excited to extend the series and look forward to four more matchups that will have both fan bases eagerly awaiting the day tickets go on sale.”
The 2024 Backyard Brawl is expected to draw a large crowd, continuing the tradition of passionate fan support that has characterized this rivalry for over a century. With both teams eager to assert dominance, the November 15 game promises to be a thrilling chapter in the history of the Backyard Brawl.
Ticket information and additional details about the game will be announced by both universities in the coming months.
