Bangles singer and guitarist Susanna Hoffs has released a fresh solo version of the band’s classic hit, ‘Eternal Flame’. The updated track, now available for digital download and streaming, stays true to the original but with a more stripped-down arrangement. Hoffs’ signature vocals remain as strong and heartfelt as ever.
Originally co-written by Hoffs alongside Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, ‘Eternal Flame’ first appeared on The Bangles’ 1988 album ‘Everything’ and topped the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1989. Reflecting on the song’s legacy, Hoffs shared a heartfelt message on social media, expressing her deep connection to the track.
“I was inspired to sing it again!” she wrote. “As I stood before the microphone, I fought back tears of gratitude for the opportunity to revisit a song I have cherished throughout my life. We’ve grown up together!” She also spoke about the emotional impact the song has had on listeners, from weddings to moments of solace.
The new recording features contributions from Petra Haden (backing vocals), Benny Bock (keyboards), Maxwell Flanders (drums), Ryan Lerman (guitar), and Justin Meldal-Johnsen (bass). Hoffs has also announced another rendition of ‘Eternal Flame’ featuring the yMusic chamber ensemble, set for digital release on April 9.
The song’s origins trace back to a conversation between Hoffs and Steinberg, where she recounted a visit to Graceland and seeing a memorial candle for Elvis Presley. That story became the inspiration for ‘Eternal Flame’, though ironically, rain had extinguished the flame that day.
The track has had a lasting influence, including a No. 1 cover by British pop group Atomic Kitten in 2001. Hoffs, who recently performed at a Patti Smith tribute concert, will take the stage again at the BeachLife Festival in May. She also confirmed that a new solo album is on the way, set for release in fall 2024.
