Sad News: Three-time Olympic medallist Federica Brignone suffers serious injury during giant slalom at Italian Championships..

Federica Brignone, one of Italy’s top contenders for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, now faces a challenging recovery after a severe crash at the Italian Championships. The 34-year-old from Milan sustained a displaced and comminuted fracture of the tibial plateau and fibular head in her left leg during the giant slalom event.

A CT scan at Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento confirmed the extent of her injuries, prompting immediate medical attention. Brignone had been one of Italy’s brightest hopes for the upcoming Winter Games, especially after her victory in the giant slalom at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships earlier this year.

The FISI Medical Commission is closely monitoring her condition and has arranged for her transfer to Milan’s “La Madonnina” clinic for further evaluations and to finalize a surgical plan. In a social media post, the commission expressed its support:

“Get well soon, Fede.”

A three-time Olympic medalist, Brignone earned two bronzes and a silver at the Beijing 2022 and PyeongChang 2018 Olympics. She was in the midst of her best season yet, having recently secured the overall title in the World Cup standings.

At this stage, there is no definitive timeline for her return to competition.
