The track and field world is abuzz as Grand Slam Track (GST), the groundbreaking competition launched by Michael Johnson, edges closer. With top athletes gearing up for multiple events, anticipation is at an all-time high. However, no storyline has sparked as much debate as Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s GST schedule especially with a familiar rival also in the mix.
Track fans may recall the 2023 Wanda Diamond League, where McLaughlin-Levrone, a top contender in the 400m flat, was unexpectedly beaten by Marileidy Paulino. Before that race, Paulino confidently dismissed any intimidation, stating, “There is no fear.” Though McLaughlin-Levrone missed the Diamond League Final, she later clocked 49.11 in Brussels three-tenths of a second faster than Paulino’s winning time.
Now, as per GST’s official site, the two will be competing in different events McLaughlin-Levrone in the 400m hurdles and Paulino in the 400m flat. However, Johnson has confirmed that a head-to-head showdown is indeed on the horizon. Unlike traditional meets, GST will challenge athletes to compete in multiple races across a three-day weekend, with scores from both events determining the winner. Johnson explained, “Our format is unique athletes have to run multiple races.”
In a recent appearance on ‘The Rich Eisen Show’, Johnson revealed that McLaughlin-Levrone will be taking on both the 400m hurdles and the 400m flat—where Paulino, the reigning Olympic champion, awaits. “We have Marileidy Paulino, who’s going to have to run against Sydney in that 400,” Johnson stated, fueling anticipation for a high-stakes clash.
Beyond mere competition, GST’s format demands adaptability and quick recovery, adding an extra layer of intensity. Johnson believes this format resonates with both athletes and fans. “The athletes love it. It gives the same thrill as the Olympics,” he noted. And for fans, it’s a dream matchup two elite champions competing head-to-head in multiple races.
But can McLaughlin-Levrone’s versatility outshine Paulino’s sheer 400m power? Some believe McLaughlin-Levrone’s front-running style could give her an edge, while others argue Paulino’s late-race surge makes her a dangerous opponent. Adding to the debate, some speculate that Paulino may not be at peak form early in the season, potentially giving McLaughlin-Levrone the upper hand.
While GST’s format might not immediately deliver the expected showdown, there’s still a chance for an eventual clash between the two. As GST unfolds, fans will soon find out whether McLaughlin-Levrone’s all-around ability can overcome Paulino’s raw speed or if Paulino will once again prove to be her toughest challenge yet.
