Three emerge as potential candidates in WVU men’s basketball coaching search..

The search for a new men’s basketball head coach continues following Darian DeVries’ departure, with three new candidates emerging as potential replacements.

One of the top names in the conversation is Steve Forbes, the current head coach at Wake Forest. Forbes has guided the Demon Deacons to three 20-win seasons in the past four years but has yet to secure an NCAA Tournament appearance. Recruiting and NIL compensation challenges place Wake Forest behind in-state rivals Duke, UNC, and NC State. Despite these hurdles, Forbes has twice matched the program record with 13 ACC wins.

Another candidate drawing attention is Ross Hodge, the head coach at North Texas. Hodge previously served as the school’s associate head coach during Wren Baker’s tenure as athletic director. In his first season as head coach, he set a program record for most league wins with 24. Although North Texas missed the NCAA Tournament, they remain active in the NIT.

The final candidate is Richard Pitino, son of legendary coach Rick Pitino. In four seasons at New Mexico, he has compiled an 88-49 record, including a 27-8 mark this year. Under his leadership, the Lobos made the NCAA Tournament and pulled off an upset over No. 7 Marquette before falling to Michigan State in the Second Round.

No official decision has been made, but Wren Baker has assured fans that he is committed to selecting the best coach for the program.
