In a recent interview, ESPN analyst and former Duke basketball star Jay Bilas opened up about his decision to choose Duke University back in the early 1980s, long before the Blue Devils would go on to dominate college basketball under the leadership of Coach Mike Krzyzewski. Bilas, who went on to become one of the most respected voices in basketball commentary, explained how his choice to play for Duke wasn’t based on the program’s future successes or its eventual rise to prominence—it was about something far more personal.

 

Bilas, a 6-foot-8 forward, was recruited by several top-tier basketball programs during his high school years in California.
