Swiss skiing star Lara Gut-Behrami will miss the remainder of the Olympic season after suffering a serious knee injury during a training crash in the United States, the athlete confirmed on Thursday.
The 34-year-old, who was set to defend her Olympic super-G title at the upcoming Winter Games in Cortina d’Ampezzo next February, had intended to retire at the end of the season in March.
Gut-Behrami was injured last week while training for the super-G event in Copper Mountain. She later confirmed reports that she tore ligaments in her left knee and also damaged her meniscus.
In a statement, the two-time World Cup overall champion said she did not view the injury as a tragedy, especially in light of the recent deaths of young skiers in training accidents.
She is scheduled to undergo surgery next week and has not officially announced her retirement, saying she will decide on her future once she recovers.
The 2026 Winter Olympics would have marked Gut-Behrami’s fourth Winter Games. The women’s Alpine skiing events are set to take place on the same course where she won world championship gold medals in super-G and giant slalom in 2021, along with a downhill bronze medal.
