Formal WVU Assistant/Defensive Coordinator is Headed to the NFL..

Former West Virginia assistant Jeff Koonz has secured a new coaching position.

According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Koonz is joining the Green Bay Packers’ staff, though his specific role has not yet been revealed.

Koonz arrived at West Virginia in 2019 as part of Neal Brown’s original staff, having previously coached at Texas, Iowa State, Louisiana Tech, Cincinnati, North Texas, and Ole Miss.

After defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley was fired, Koonz stepped in as interim DC for the final four regular-season games and the bowl game. While his tenure wasnโ€™t particularly successful West Virginiaโ€™s defense allowed 49, 21, 52, and 42 points in those contests he inherited a difficult situation with a roster that lacked depth and didnโ€™t fit the scheme.

Despite the challenges, Koonz is regarded as a highly intelligent coach, and with better resources and structure at the NFL level, he has the potential to thrive in Green Bay.
