Shaun Murphy opened up about the darker side of social media before his run to the 2026 World Snooker Championship final, admitting he sometimes questions why players continue to expose themselves to online abuse.
The former world champion reflected on the negativity players face online, while also stressing the importance of using social media to connect with younger fans and help grow snooker for the future. Murphy explained that he wants to leave the sport in a stronger position when he eventually retires and believes engaging with supporters is part of that responsibility.
He also praised his fiancée, Jo, for playing a major role behind the scenes in managing and creating his social media content, calling her the “unsung hero” of the operation.
Murphy enjoyed an impressive run at the Crucible after several disappointing years in Sheffield. The 43-year-old edged past Fan Zhengyi in the opening round before dominant victories over Xiao Guodong, Zhao Xintong and John Higgins sent him into the final.
However, he narrowly lost 18-17 to Wu Yize in a dramatic deciding frame. Despite the defeat, Murphy was full of admiration for the Chinese star, praising both his talent and work ethic, while also applauding the dedication shown by Chinese players who have helped raise standards within the sport.
