“Congratulations Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone” – Athletics stars nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Sifan Hassan, Faith Kipyegon, and Mondo Duplantis have been nominated for the 2025 Laureus World Sports Awards in the categories of World Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year, respectively.

A total of six Olympic champions and a Paralympic gold medalist from the Paris 2024 Games are among this year’s nominees.

 

Sportswoman of the Year Nominees

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone: The American sprinter set a world record while defending her Olympic 400m hurdles title in Paris. She then contributed to the U.S. women’s 4x400m relay team’s gold medal victory at the Stade de France.

Sifan Hassan: The Dutch athlete made history by becoming the first woman to win medals in the 5000m, 10,000m, and marathon at the same Olympics. She claimed bronze in the two shorter distances before winning marathon gold all within six days.

Faith Kipyegon: The Kenyan middle-distance star became the first athlete to win three consecutive Olympic titles in the 1500m, adding to her golds from Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. She also secured silver in the 5000m and set a new world record of 3:49.04 at the Paris Diamond League.

 

Sportsman of the Year Nominee

Mondo Duplantis: The Swedish pole vaulter successfully defended his Olympic title in Paris, clearing a world-record height of 6.25m. He later extended that record to 6.27m.

 

World Breakthrough of the Year Nominees

Letsile Tebogo: The Botswanan sprinter became his country’s first-ever Olympic champion, winning the 200m in an African record time of 19.46 placing him fifth on the all-time list. He later helped Botswana secure silver in the men’s 4x400m relay.

Julien Alfred: The Saint Lucian sprinter won the Olympic 100m title and followed it up with silver in the 200m—securing her nation’s first-ever Olympic medals. In response, Saint Lucia declared a national holiday in her honor.

 

Paralympic Nominee

Catherine Debrunner: The Swiss wheelchair racer is up for the World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability Award after winning five gold medals in the T53 400m and 800m, as well as the T54 1500m, 5000m, and marathon. She also claimed silver in the T53 100m. Outside the Olympics, she triumphed in the London, Chicago, and Berlin Marathons.

These nominees represent some of the most outstanding athletic achievements of the past year, highlighting historic performances across multiple sports.
