Report: West Virginia hiring one of college football’s best running backs coaches.

West Virginia head coach,  Rich Rodriguez quickly addressed the departure of his running backs coach by bringing in one of the top names in the field.

According to FootballScoop, RichRod and West Virginia are set to hire veteran coach Larry Porter to lead the Mountaineers’ running backs. Porter steps in for Chad Scott, who recently accepted the same position at Texas under Steve Sarkisian, following Tashard Choice’s move to the NFL.

Porter boasts an impressive résumé in developing running backs, most recently mentoring Omarion Hampton, a former UNC standout projected as one of the top running backs in this year’s NFL Draft.

A former Memphis running back himself, Porter has extensive experience at Power Five programs. He spent nine years coaching running backs in the SEC, first at LSU and later at Auburn, with an additional stint at Texas.

At North Carolina, Porter was one of Mack Brown’s longest-tenured assistants, serving as both running backs coach and special teams coordinator. His availability to join West Virginia came after UNC hired NFL coaching legend Bill Belichick for his first collegiate role. Meanwhile, RichRod is making his own return to Morgantown for a second stint with the Mountaineers.
