Video circulating online shows Van Gerwen chatting with a man and a woman at a venue in Den Bosch during King’s Day when the man अचानक punched him. Security quickly intervened, pulling the attacker away as Van Gerwen moved after him.
The former world number one later said the individual appeared heavily intoxicated and that the outburst seemed unprovoked. He also admitted regret over chasing the attacker, describing it as an instinctive reaction to the shock.
The attacker has since apologised via Instagram, and Van Gerwen has chosen not to take legal action.
The incident came just before Van Gerwen returned to Premier League Darts action in Aberdeen, where he lost 6-3 in the quarter-finals to Luke Humphries.
Van Gerwen, widely regarded as one of the sport’s all-time greats, held the world number one ranking from 2014 to 2021, winning multiple major titles during that period and placing second on the all-time list behind Phil Taylor.
