As Lewis Hamilton prepares for his 18th season in Formula 1, the seven-time world champion has faced increasing comparisons to other athletes who have competed at an elite level into their 40s. With his 40th birthday in January 2025, many have drawn parallels between Hamilton and stars like Tom Brady, LeBron James, and Fernando Alonso, who have defied age to remain competitive in their respective sports.
However, Hamilton isn’t interested in these comparisons. When asked about how he stacks up against other aging athletes, he delivered a strong response. “I don’t see myself through the lens of age. I feel just as sharp, just as motivated, and just as capable as ever,” Hamilton stated. “Every athlete has their own journey, their own challenges. What works for one doesn’t necessarily apply to another.”
The Mercedes driver has continuously emphasized his commitment to physical fitness, mental resilience, and adapting to the ever-evolving nature of F1. Unlike some other sports, Formula 1 demands a unique combination of reflexes, endurance, and technical skill, something Hamilton believes he has maintained at a high level.
“My focus is on what I can control my training, my preparation, and my passion for racing. I’m not here to prove I can still compete at 40; I’m here to win,” he added.
As he embarks on his final season with Mercedes before joining Ferrari in 2025, Hamilton remains determined to fight for another world championship. If his mindset is anything to go by, age is just a number for the British racing legend.
