Alabama football will have ‘modified’ A-Day game in 2025, per Kalen DeBoer.

Kalen DeBoer and Alabama football are making adjustments to their traditional spring game, joining a growing number of programs modifying or even canceling the event.

While some schools have scrapped their spring games altogether, Alabama is opting for a modified approach. DeBoer explained to ‘On3’ that the Crimson Tide’s A-Day Game has often resembled a practice with some scrimmaging rather than a full game. This year, due to injuries and other considerations, the format will be adjusted. “Even when I was at Fresno State, we called it the spring preview,” DeBoer said. “We want to try to have some type of event around April 12.”

Programs like Nebraska, USC, and Texas have decided to cancel their spring games, citing various reasons. Some are aiming to reduce player wear and tear while adopting an NFL-style training model. Others are looking to limit how much opposing teams can scout their players ahead of the spring transfer portal window.

DeBoer acknowledged these concerns, noting the impact of publicly showcasing team developments. “We certainly understand the impact that putting things out there for the whole world to see, especially with the transfer portal,” he said.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian recently shared a similar perspective, explaining that the Longhorns are shifting toward an NFL-style approach with structured team activities before moving into scrimmages. “I just don’t know if rolling the ball out and playing a game when we only get 15 practices is the best way to maximize our opportunities,” Sarkisian said.

With the landscape of college football evolving, it’s evident that spring games are no longer the same as they once were, and teams are adapting accordingly.
