MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — While coaching Jacksonville State to a Conference USA Championship last season, Rich Rodriguez didn’t have much time to watch Neal Brown’s West Virginia Mountaineers. However, from the little he did see, he wasn’t impressed.
“I didn’t watch much film from last season,” Rodriguez admitted. “But I did catch the finale against Texas Tech… until I couldn’t stomach it anymore.”
West Virginia, which finished the season with a 6-7 record, suffered a humiliating 15-52 loss in Lubbock, marking the end of Neal Brown’s tenure. Among the many rough outings under Brown’s leadership, this game stood out as one of the worst. The Mountaineers’ defense was completely overmatched, surrendering 569 yards in a lopsided defeat.
Rodriguez’s harsh critique likely resonates with many West Virginia fans, who were already frustrated with the team’s struggles. In the aftermath of the loss, Brown was fired, and Chad Scott stepped in as interim head coach for the Frisco Bowl against Memphis. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers couldn’t turn things around, falling 37-42 and officially closing the book on the Neal Brown era.
