Lindsey Vonn’s peers say her return at 40 is ‘pretty freaking awesome..

Lindsey Vonn’s decision to return to competitive downhill skiing at 40, after nearly six years of retirement and with a titanium knee, has sparked mixed reactions. While some retired legends like Franz Klammer and Marc Girardelli have harshly criticized her comeback, suggesting underlying psychological issues, many current and former skiers have rallied behind her.

Marcel Hirscher, an eight-time overall World Cup champion who also attempted a comeback this season at 35 before a knee injury sidelined him, called the criticism unfair. For him, Vonn’s return is an inspiration. Watching her finish sixth and fourth in St. Anton last month moved him deeply. “It was incredible. No one expected that,” he said, adding that Vonn’s pursuit of her dreams shows that hard work makes almost anything possible.

Despite recent struggles, including three DNFs in her last six events and a 15th-place finish at the world championships, Vonn’s comeback remains impressive. Chemmy Alcott, a retired British skier and BBC commentator, admires Vonn’s determination, recalling how she repeatedly fought back from serious injuries. Alcott believes Vonn’s results are secondary to her passion and the inspiration she brings to the sport.

Dave Ryding, who finished sixth in the world championships slalom at 38, acknowledges Vonn’s feat as “pretty awesome,” especially given her time away from the sport. Ryding, who became the first British World Cup winner in Kitzbuehel three years ago, knows firsthand the mental and physical toll of competing at a high level as an older athlete.

Veterans like Christof Innerhofer and Adrien Theaux, both 40, understand the challenges Vonn faces. Theaux admits that while Vonn can excel, consistency will be difficult due to physical strain.

With her sights set on the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo where she holds 12 World Cup wins Vonn’s fearless approach remains unchanged. As Alcott notes, Vonn’s willingness to take risks rather than play it safe is what makes her return remarkable.
