Lindsey Vonn issues five-word retirement message after horror Winter Olympics injury
American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn has broken her silence about her future in the sport following a devastating crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics. After weeks of speculation that the injury could force her to retire for good, the Olympic champion delivered a defiant five-word statement that quickly captured global attention: “Who said I was retiring?”
The message came after Vonn endured one of the most serious injuries of her storied career. During the women’s downhill event at the Games in Italy, the 41-year-old lost control just seconds into her run and suffered a complex fracture of her left tibia, an injury severe enough to require multiple surgeries.
A terrifying Olympic crash
The accident occurred shortly after Vonn burst out of the starting gate during the downhill race. Only about 13 seconds into the run, she caught a gate with her arm and crashed violently down the slope, leaving fans and officials fearing the worst.
Vonn was airlifted to hospital, where doctors quickly determined the extent of the damage. The injury triggered compartment syndrome, a dangerous condition that can restrict blood flow and threaten the limb. Surgeons performed emergency procedures — including a fasciotomy — to relieve pressure and stabilize the leg. At one point, there were fears she could even lose the limb without immediate treatment.
In total, Vonn has undergone five surgeries since the crash, with several procedures carried out in Italy before she returned to the United States for further treatment and rehabilitation.
Recovery already underway
Despite the severity of the injury, Vonn has already begun her rehabilitation journey. In recent updates shared on social media, she revealed she had started light exercise and was able to pedal a stationary bike for short sessions as part of her recovery program.
The Olympic gold medalist also showed fans the mobility scooter she is using while healing, demonstrating her trademark humor even during an incredibly difficult period.
Defying calls to retire
Following the crash, speculation about Vonn’s future intensified. Some observers — including her father — publicly urged her to consider retiring for good after the frightening incident.
But the decorated skier quickly shut down the rumors with her five-word statement, making it clear that she alone will decide when her career ends.
Her determination comes as little surprise given her extraordinary career resilience. Vonn previously retired in 2019 due to chronic injuries but returned to competitive skiing in 2024, determined to chase another Olympic moment.
A legendary career
Regardless of what comes next, Vonn remains one of the most successful alpine skiers in history. She has won three Olympic medals, including downhill gold in 2010, along with 84 World Cup victories and numerous overall titles.
For now, the American star is focused on healing and regaining strength. Yet her brief but powerful response to retirement talk suggests that the fierce competitor who dominated the slopes for more than a decade may not be ready to walk away just yet.
If her message is any indication, Vonn’s story in elite skiing might still have another chapter.
