COLUMBIA — South Carolina sophomore guard Maddy McDaniel has been suspended, the university announced Monday on social media.
The No. 2 Gamecocks are set to host Clemson on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. ET. A post from the team’s official X (formerly Twitter) account read: “Maddy McDaniel will not be at tonight’s game. She has been suspended.”
No further information has been released about the reason or length of the suspension.
McDaniel, a 5-foot-9 guard from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, was injured in the Gamecocks’ season opener against Grand Canyon on Nov. 3 after a knee-to-knee collision. She was seen wearing a brace on the bench during the Nov. 7 matchup with Bowling Green but did not play.
Head coach Dawn Staley told reporters on Nov. 10 that McDaniel “probably” wouldn’t play against Clemson and confirmed she was in rehab. McDaniel was not present during the media portion of practice that day.
As a freshman, McDaniel averaged 3.1 points in 11 minutes per game off the bench. This season, she was expected to take on a larger role as backup point guard behind Raven Johnson. Before her injury, she contributed eight points and two assists in eight minutes versus Grand Canyon.
As of Monday evening, the cause of McDaniel’s suspension has not been made public.
