The South Carolina Gamecocks have announced that offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Shula has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately.
Head coach Shane Beamer made the decision after the teamโs performance on offense fell well below expectations.
At the time of the move, the Gamecocks held a 3โ6 overall record and a 1โ6 mark in Southeastern Conference play.
Offensively, South Carolina was ranked at or near the bottom of the SEC in major categories: averaging just 19.7 points per game, 294.1 total yards per game, roughly 100.8 rushing yards and about 193.3 passing yards.
The decision comes amid growing frustration over the unitโs inability to consistently move the ball or finish drives, and followed a road loss to Ole Miss Rebels by a score of 30โ14 in which the offense mustered only around 230 total yards.
With an open date upcoming and a tough road test at Texas A&M Aggies on schedule, the timing of this coaching change signals an urgent push to salvage the remainder of the season.
The move leaves South Carolina needing to name an interim leader of the offense and perhaps re-examine scheme, play-calling, and personnel to try to ignite the stagnant unit.
Coach Beamer will also face recruiting and morale implications, as changes in coordinator positions often ripple into off-season planning.
