NETFLIX, Mathieu Van Der Poel to Release documentary series “Tour de France: Unchained”  season 3 and 4 on…

“Tour de France: Unchained” is a Netflix documentary series that offers an intimate look into the world’s most prestigious cycling race. The series has garnered attention for its behind-the-scenes footage and in-depth profiles of riders and teams. As of February 2025, the series has released two seasons, covering the 2022 and 2023 Tours de France.

Seasons 1 and 2: A Deep Dive into the Tour de France

The inaugural season, released on June 8, 2023, followed selected riders and their teams through the 2022 Tour de France. Produced by Box to Box Films and Quad, the series aimed to provide viewers with a behind-the-scenes look at the race, similar to the approach taken in “Formula 1: Drive to Survive.” The first season featured eight of the Tour’s 22 teams, with episodes lasting around 40 minutes each.

Season 2 continued this format, releasing eight new episodes that delved into the 2023 Tour de France. The series maintained its focus on the personal and professional lives of the cyclists, offering fans unprecedented access to the race.

Season 3: Anticipation and Challenges

In mid-2024, Netflix announced the renewal of “Tour de France: Unchained” for a third season, with production underway. The season was anticipated to cover the 2024 Tour de France, scheduled for June 2024. However, reports emerged that the series would be discontinued after three seasons, with the third season set for release in June 2025. Challenges in creating compelling storylines and average viewership ratings contributed to this decision.

Mathieu van der Poel’s Involvement

Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel has been a prominent figure in the series, known for his dynamic racing style and charismatic personality. His participation in the 2024 Tour de France was anticipated to be a focal point in Season 3. However, in late 2024, van der Poel hinted at a potential shift in his racing schedule, expressing interest in focusing on mountain biking and possibly skipping the 2025 Tour de France.

Despite these hints, van der Poel confirmed his participation in the 2025 Tour de France, aiming for success in the road race. He also expressed his ambition to become the World Champion in mountain biking, indicating a dual focus for the upcoming season.

The Future of “Tour de France: Unchained”

As of February 2025, “Tour de France: Unchained” is set to release its third and final season in June 2025. The series has played a significant role in bringing cycling to a broader audience, offering an unprecedented look into the lives of professional cyclists and the challenges they face during the Tour de France. While the series is concluding, its impact on sports documentaries and the portrayal of cycling in popular media is expected to endure.
