Mathieu van der Poel, the Dutch cycling prodigy renowned for his versatility across disciplines, has unveiled his road racing schedule for the 2025 season. His program mirrors his previous years, focusing on the spring classics and culminating in the Tour de France.
Spring Classics
Van der Poel’s season is set to commence in March, following a well-deserved rest and training after the cyclocross World Championships. He will participate in Paris-Nice, Milan-San Remo, E3 Saxo Bank Classic, Tour des Flandres, and Paris-Roubaix. These races are pivotal in his preparation for the Tour de France.
Tour de France
In July, van der Poel plans to compete in the Tour de France, aiming to build on his previous performances in this prestigious event.
UCI Rule Changes for 2025
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has implemented several rule changes for the 2025 season:
– Yellow Cards: A new system has been introduced where riders can receive yellow cards for infractions. Accumulating multiple yellow cards within a specified period can lead to suspensions.
– Sprint Zone Expansion: The sprint zone on stages has been extended from 3 kilometers to 5 kilometers, providing riders with a larger area to contest sprints.
– Women’s Race Distances: The maximum race distance for women’s events has been increased from 160 kilometers to 180 kilometers, promoting greater equality in race formats.
– Carbon Monoxide Use: The UCI has banned the use of carbon monoxide as a performance-enhancing method, addressing health concerns associated with its use.
– WorldTour Participation: Starting in 2026, WorldTour teams will be required to participate in a majority o
f major competitions, including the three Grand Tours and five Monument races, ensuring the presence of top-tier teams in these events.
