Injury setback could delay Caitlin Clark’s return to Fever. Caitlin Clark’s return to the Indiana Fever may face further delay after the star guard suffered a left ankle bone bruise earlier this month, according to multiple reports on Wednesday.
Fieldhouse Files and the Indianapolis Star noted that Clark sustained the injury during an individual workout in Phoenix on August 7. She was already sidelined with a right groin issue that has kept her off the court since July 15. The Fever have not yet announced when she might be cleared for game action.
The setback came on a difficult day for Indiana, as guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson also suffered major injuries—McDonald broke her right foot, while Colson tore her left ACL. Both are out for the remainder of the season. Additionally, guard Sophie Cunningham tore her right MCL on Sunday, ending her season as well.
Since Clark’s last appearance, Indiana has managed a 7-6 record and currently stands at 19-16, holding sixth place in the WNBA standings. With only a two-game cushion over the ninth-place Los Angeles Sparks, the Fever remain in a tight playoff race, as only the top eight teams qualify.
Clark, 23, has averaged 16.5 points, 8.8 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals through 13 games this season. The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year posted 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals across 40 games last year.
The Fever, who have dropped four of their last six contests, face the first-place Minnesota Lynx in a home-and-home series beginning Friday in Indianapolis and concluding Sunday in Minneapolis.
