Jonah Koech and Nikki Hiltz win thrilling 1500m titles at the 2025 USATF Championships, securing spots on Team USA for the World Championships in Tokyo.

Every great achievement begins with the decision to try, risk, and believe. That belief was on full display at Hayward Field on Saturday as Jonah Koech and Nikki Hiltz delivered electrifying performances to win their respective 1500m titles at the 2025 USATF Outdoor Championships, earning coveted spots on Team USA for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo later this month.

The men’s final saw Jonah Koech storm to victory in a tactical, tension-filled race. The 27-year-old, a member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program, bided his time through the early laps before unleashing a devastating final kick over the last 300 meters. He crossed the line in 3:34.76, edging out defending champion Yared Nuguse in a photo finish. Cole Hocker rounded out the top three to also secure a place on the World Championship roster.

“I knew I had to be patient,” Koech said after the race. “This is the moment we all train for—getting to represent your country on the world stage. I just trusted my training, stayed calm, and went for it when the time came.”

If the men’s race was dramatic, the women’s final was nothing short of historic. Nikki Hiltz powered to victory in 3:57.09, setting a new personal best and meet record in the process. The performance capped a remarkable comeback season for Hiltz, who has emerged as one of the sport’s most prominent advocates and fan favorites.

In a fast and aggressive race from the gun, Hiltz held position in the lead pack before making their move with 200 meters to go. Surging past Elle St. Pierre and Emily Mackay in the final stretch, Hiltz lifted both arms in triumph as they crossed the finish line to a roaring crowd.

“I just kept telling myself, ‘Be brave. Be you. Be bold,’” Hiltz said. “This is for everyone who’s ever felt like they didn’t belong. Today, we all belong.”

Hiltz, who identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, became the first openly nonbinary athlete to win a U.S. track title in 2023, and now heads to Tokyo as a serious medal contender.

With both Koech and Hiltz leading the charge, Team USA’s 1500m squad promises to be one of the most competitive in recent history. The victories underscore not only the physical talent on display, but also the deep mental resolve of athletes who have overcome setbacks, doubts, and fierce national competition.

The 2025 World Athletics Championships begin August 17 in Tokyo, where Koech, Hiltz, and the rest of Team USA will take on the best in the world.

As Hiltz summed it up best at the post-race press conference:

“Every great achievement begins with the decision to try, risk, and believe in something bigger than yourself. We believed. And today, we earned this.”
