PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Michael T. Benson has taken on the role as the 27th president of West Virginia University (WVU).
Currently, he’s on his first“Welcome Home Tour,” which will take him through 18 counties, including stops at historic landmarks, businesses, and local communities. Benson says the tour has helped him recognize WVU’s far-reaching impact across West Virginia and better understand residents’ perspectives on how the university can continue to improve.
Before joining WVU, Benson served as president of Coastal Carolina University. He says he’s bringing with him the leadership skills he’s gained over the years.
“The way you interact with people, how you set a tone, a strategic vision, applies everywhere,” he stated.
Benson is optimistic about the year ahead, especially with strong freshman enrollment figures. He’s confident WVU can compete with other top schools in the region.
He also has high expectations for the university’s athletic programs. Wren Baker, who has been performing well as Athletic Director, recently had his contract extended. Benson recognizes the vital role football plays in the state’s culture and is hopeful for more big victories from the team.
On the academic front, Benson addressed concerns about artificial intelligence in the classroom. He believes AI should be incorporated into general education, not only as a requirement for students to gain proficiency but also as a tool to prepare them for the evolving job market.
