Former WVU Guard JJ Quinerly to Return Next Season After Mark Kellogg’s Agreement with Dallas Wings Head Coach
West Virginia University standout guard JJ Quinerly will be returning to Morgantown for another season with the Mountaineers, following discussions between WVU head coach Mark Kellogg and Dallas Wings head coach Latricia Trammell.
Quinerly, one of the most dynamic players in the Big 12, entered the NCAA transfer portal earlier this year and was widely believed to be exploring professional opportunities, including potential interest from WNBA teams. However, after careful consideration and a key conversation between Kellogg and Trammell, Quinerly has decided to postpone her professional ambitions and continue her college career at WVU for the 2025 season.
Mark Kellogg, entering his second season as head coach at West Virginia, played a pivotal role in the decision. Sources close to the program indicated that Kellogg initiated contact with Trammell to discuss Quinerly’s future prospects in the WNBA, where she has drawn attention for her scoring ability, court vision, and defensive tenacity. During the conversation, Trammell reportedly expressed strong interest in Quinerly’s long-term potential, but also emphasized the value of an additional year of college development to further enhance her readiness for the next level.
That feedback appears to have influenced Quinerly’s thinking. In a statement released through WVU Athletics, she shared her excitement about returning: “After talking with Coach Kellogg and learning more about what’s ahead, I realized that I have more to accomplish here at West Virginia. I’m proud to wear the Gold and Blue, and I’m not done yet.”
Quinerly’s return is a major boost for the Mountaineers, who are aiming to build on a strong 2024 campaign that saw them finish near the top of the Big 12 and make a solid run in the NCAA Tournament. Quinerly was the team’s leading scorer last season, averaging 18.5 points per game, along with 4.2 assists and 2.1 steals. Her ability to take over games and provide leadership on both ends of the floor makes her a cornerstone of the program.
Coach Kellogg praised Quinerly’s maturity and commitment to growth. “JJ is a special talent, and we’re thrilled to have her back,” he said. “She took the time to think through her options and made a decision based on what’s best for her development. I think it shows how driven she is not just to reach the next level, but to be truly prepared for it.”
With Quinerly’s return, WVU’s outlook for the upcoming season becomes even brighter. The team retains a core group of experienced players and adds a strong recruiting class, setting the stage for a potential Big 12 title run.
As for Quinerly, her eyes remain on the future — both in Morgantown and beyond. But for now, Mountaineer fans can look forward to one more season of thrilling performances from one of the program’s brightest stars.
