Kalen DeBoer discusses replacing all three Alabama specialists in 2025.

ATLANTA – Alabama boasted one of the top special teams units in college football last season, but heading into 2025, that unit is undergoing major changes. While the team didn’t lose many seniors overall, three of the few who did graduate were key specialists the starting punter, kicker, and long snapper.

Speaking at SEC Media Days, head coach Kalen DeBoer addressed those departures and expressed confidence in the replacements. “We only lost eight seniors three on defense, two on offense, and three specialists,” he said. “Specialists are often overlooked, but those guys had a big impact. Fortunately, we played more freshmen on special teams than any other SEC program, so we’ve developed some depth.”

Among the biggest shoes to fill is punter James Burnip, a standout in the SEC and a 2023 All-SEC honoree. “He’s the best punter I’ve ever coached,” DeBoer said. His replacements include freshman Alex Asparuhov, a highly ranked recruit, and senior transfer Blake Doud from Colorado School of Mines.

At long snapper, Alabama is replacing longtime starter Kneeland Hibbett, who was known for his consistency. The Tide brought in Cal transfer David Bird and return sophomore Jay Williams, who served as backup last season.

For placekicker, Alabama has a smoother transition plan. Graham Nicholson, who transferred from Miami (OH), handled kicking duties last year. Behind him was Conor Talty, now a redshirt sophomore, who has gained experience on kickoffs and is poised to take over. “Conor’s really improved,” DeBoer said. “He’s more consistent and confident now. We think he’s ready.”

Though Alabama is replacing a trio of seasoned specialists, DeBoer remains optimistic that the new wave of players will rise to the challenge.
