Celtics free agent signs with Charlotte Hornets.

Forward Drew Peterson, who spent the last year and a half with the Celtics, is reportedly signing a two-way contact with the Hornets.

Drew Peterson, who had a stint with the Boston Celtics over the past season and a half, has signed a two-way contract with the Charlotte Hornets, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. Peterson initially joined the Celtics on a two-way deal during their 2023-24 championship campaign and remained under the same type of contract last season. However, as a restricted free agent this summer, he was not extended a qualifying offer by Boston. His chances of staying likely diminished after the Celtics traded their 32nd overall draft pick for two later second-round selections, Amari Williams and Max Shulga both of whom are now filling two-way roster spots.

During his time in Boston, Peterson played in 28 games, averaging 2.3 points on 44.7% shooting from the field and 42.1% from beyond the arc. Despite the efficiency, his playing time was limited, and he only appeared in a few meaningful games.

Peterson will now join a familiar coaching environment in Charlotte. Hornets head coach Charles Lee was the Celtics’ top assistant during Peterson’s rookie season, and assistant coach Blaine Mueller, who coached Peterson with the G League’s Maine Celtics, is also now on the Hornets’ staff.

Before the draft, Peterson told CelticsBlog/CLNA Media he was aiming for a standard NBA contract. “I’m hoping to prove my value and show I belong out there,” he said. “I was pleased with the chances I got this year and feel I proved I can hold my own in high-level NBA games. That’s the goal.”

He also expressed a desire to remain with the Celtics, saying, “I love it here. It’s been a great couple of years, and I’d love to stay longer… I can’t say enough good things about being in Boston.”
