Alex Eala also crashed out of the doubles’ play along with partner Eva Lys after getting swept by the pair of Ingrid Martens and Quinn Gleason, 4-6, 2-6 Thursday evening (Manila time).

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala saw her Wimbledon 2025 campaign come to a disappointing close on Thursday evening (Manila time), after she and her doubles partner, Germany’s Eva Lys, were eliminated in the first round of the women’s doubles competition. The pair suffered a straight-sets defeat to the experienced tandem of Ingrid Martens of the Netherlands and American Quinn Gleason, falling 4-6, 2-6.

Coming off a tough loss earlier in the singles draw, Eala was looking to make a deeper run in the doubles bracket to salvage her All England Club outing. However, Martens and Gleason proved too consistent and composed on the grass court, controlling the match from start to finish. The European-American duo broke serve early in the opening set and maintained their momentum with solid net play and sharp baseline rallies.

Eala and Lys struggled to establish rhythm, especially on return games. Despite flashes of brilliance from the 19-year-old Filipina, including a few powerful forehand winners and creative angles, they were unable to overcome the pressure applied by their opponents. The second set saw a quick unraveling, as Martens and Gleason capitalized on multiple unforced errors to close out the match in just under an hour and 15 minutes.

It marks an early exit for Eala, who entered the tournament with high hopes and growing fan support. While the results may be disappointing, the experience of competing at Wimbledon continues to build her maturity and familiarity with top-tier opponents.

The young tennis sensation is expected to regroup and prepare for her next tournaments on the WTA calendar, as she continues to rise in the rankings and gain valuable experience on the professional circuit. Despite the setbacks, Eala remains one of Asia’s brightest tennis prospects.
