Mayfield’s Sharnise Worthams Wins National Elite 400-Meter Hurdles at adidas Track Nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Mayfield High School standout Sharnise Worthams delivered a championship-worthy performance on one of the biggest stages in high school track, capturing the National Elite Division title in the girls 400-meter hurdles at the 2025 adidas Track Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Racing against top-tier talent from across the country, Worthams crossed the finish line in commanding fashion, clocking a personal best time that solidified her place among the nation’s rising track stars. The victory not only marks a career milestone for the junior but also puts Mayfield High on the national map in the sport.

“I’ve been training for this moment all season,” Worthams said after her win. “To come here and not just compete, but win, is a dream come true. I knew the competition would be tough, but I trusted my training, stayed focused, and gave everything I had.”

The National Elite Division is one tier below the Championship Division at adidas Nationals, but still attracts some of the top high school athletes in the U.S. Worthams entered the event ranked among the top qualifiers, and from the opening stride of her heat, it was clear she was on a mission. Her technique over the hurdles was smooth and efficient, and she maintained a strong, consistent pace throughout the lap.

By the final 100 meters, Worthams had pulled ahead of the field, showcasing a powerful finish that left no doubt about the outcome. She raised her arms in triumph as she crossed the finish line, greeted by cheers from teammates, coaches, and a growing fan base in the stands.

Her coach, Andre Wallace, praised her composure and growth over the season. “Sharnise has worked incredibly hard to get to this point,” he said. “She’s dealt with challenges, fine-tuned her form, and stayed mentally strong. This win is the result of dedication and belief in the process.”

Worthams’ win is especially significant for the Mayfield program, which has steadily grown in competitiveness over the past few years. Her national performance adds to a breakout season that saw her dominate regional meets and post some of the top times in the state.

“She’s setting the bar for the next generation of athletes in our program,” Wallace added. “And I have no doubt she’s just getting started.”

With one more year of high school remaining, Worthams is already attracting attention from college scouts and track programs nationwide. But for now, she’s focused on savoring the moment and building on this summer’s success.

“I’m just grateful,” Worthams said. “This makes me more motivated to keep improving and aim even higher next year.”

The adidas Track Nationals, held annually at North Carolina A&T’s Marcus T. Johnson Track, features hundreds of elite high school athletes from around the country. Worthams’ performance stood out as one of the meet’s highlights — and a reminder that the future of U.S. track and field is in good hands.
