GREENSBORO – Allen Johnson Pulls Off Coaching Double with CAA Outdoor Honor
GREENSBORO – North Carolina A&T’s Allen Johnson has once again solidified his reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate track and field coaches.
On Thursday, Johnson was named the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year, marking his second major conference honor this year.
The recognition comes just three months after he was awarded the CAA Men’s Indoor Coach of the Year, completing a rare and impressive double.
The dual honors underscore Johnson’s remarkable leadership and the rapid rise of the Aggies’ program under his guidance. In only their second year competing in the CAA, North Carolina A&T has emerged as a dominant force, thanks in large part to Johnson’s ability to inspire and develop athletes across multiple disciplines.
“I’m honored to receive this recognition, but it’s really a reflection of our entire program,” Johnson said. “Our athletes work hard, our coaching staff is dedicated, and everyone is committed to pushing each other to be better every day. These awards are the result of a collective effort.”
Johnson guided the Aggies to a commanding team performance at the 2024 CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The men’s team captured the team title behind a series of standout performances in the sprints, hurdles, relays, and field events. Several A&T athletes set personal bests and season records, and multiple athletes qualified for NCAA East Preliminaries.
Among the highlights were a sweep in the sprint events, a dominant showing in the 110-meter hurdles, and a gold-medal finish in the 4×100-meter relay. These results mirrored the Aggies’ indoor success earlier in the season, when Johnson led the team to its first-ever CAA Indoor Championship. That title was also powered by elite sprinting depth and consistent performances across the board.
Johnson, an Olympic gold medalist and former world champion in the 110-meter hurdles, has brought a championship mindset to North Carolina A&T since taking the reins of the program. His attention to detail, athlete development, and ability to motivate have quickly transformed the Aggies into a powerhouse within the CAA and a threat on the national stage.
The CAA coaching double is a rare feat, made even more impressive by the consistency and excellence required to succeed across two different seasons. Indoor track presents different challenges in terms of training, competition format, and athlete readiness, yet Johnson has managed to navigate both seamlessly.
Beyond athletic success, Johnson also emphasizes academic achievement and personal growth, fostering a team culture built on discipline, accountability, and mutual respect. That culture has not only helped the Aggies win championships—it has built a foundation for long-term success.
With two CAA Coach of the Year awards in hand and a growing list of athletes excelling at the national level, Allen Johnson has proven that he’s not only building a winning program—he’s building a legacy.
