Few Proven Options Remain in Transfer Portal Arturo Dean Among Them
At this point in the college basketball offseason, it’s rare to find players with a solid track record at the high-major level. One of the few still available is Arturo Dean, a 5’11 guard out of Miami who has spent time with both Florida International and Oklahoma State.
Last season, Dean suited up for the Cowboys, starting 21 of 34 games. He posted averages of 7.6 points and 3.4 assists in 24 minutes per game, shooting 39% from the floor and 28% from beyond the arc. He reached double figures in scoring 10 times, highlighted by a 16-point, 7-rebound game in a win over UCF and an 8-point, 8-assist performance against Cincinnati.
Dean entered the transfer portal late and still has one year of eligibility remaining. Now, two programs are reportedly eyeing him. But which destination offers the better fit?
Seton Hall Pirates
Seton Hall struggled mightily on offense last season and has taken its time assembling a revamped roster. Their additions like Adam Clark (Merrimack) and Elijah Fisher (Pacific) include a mix of mid-major standouts and players with limited high-major experience.
While Dean may not be a headline acquisition, he would bring reliable depth and some stability to a team with several question marks. He could become a dependable piece in their Big East rotation.
West Virginia Mountaineers
First-year coach Ross Hodge is rebuilding West Virginia’s roster almost entirely with mid-major transfers. Jasper Floyd, who followed Hodge from North Texas after averaging 9.0 points and 3.9 assists in the AAC, is the projected starting point guard.
Even so, Dean could compete for meaningful minutes or share ball-handling duties. Perhaps most importantly, his Big 12 experience would provide much-needed leadership and familiarity for WVU’s backcourt.
