Ty Simpson may currently be the front-runner to earn Alabama’s starting quarterback job for the 2025 season, but he’s not resting on that status. The redshirt junior is putting in significant effort this summer, aiming to solidify his position and demonstrate to head coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb that he’s the best choice under center.
Although Simpson emerged from spring practice as the likely starter, the position hasn’t been officially secured. With a long offseason still ahead, including fall camp, the competition remains open. Both Austin Mack and standout freshman Keelon Russell are still in the mix and pushing Simpson for the job. Simpson will also have a valuable chance to develop later this month when he takes part in the renowned Manning Passing Academy, held June 26-29 at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
The event will feature many of the nation’s top quarterbacks, including Arch Manning, Garrett Nussmeier, Cade Klubnik, and Drew Allar. The camp, run by Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning, offers a unique learning environment there may be no family with a deeper understanding of the quarterback position. It’s a golden opportunity for Simpson to improve his game.
Simpson’s growth could be a deciding factor in Alabama’s 2025 success. The roster is loaded with talent across the board, and how far the Crimson Tide go will hinge largely on the level of quarterback play they receive. If Simpson or another QB performs at an elite level, Alabama has the tools to be the nation’s top team. At minimum, solid play under center should make this a College Football Playoff contender.
Supporting Simpson is one of the most talented wide receiver groups in the country. Alabama returns its top two pass-catchers Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard and adds Miami (FL) transfer Isaiah Horton to the mix. The depth behind the starters is equally impressive, with Jalen Hale, Rico Scott, Lotzeir Brooks, Cole Adams, and Derek Meadows providing ample backup. Combine that with a deep running back room and a seasoned offensive line, and the pieces are in place to support a new starting quarterback’s transition.
