Jamaican Olympic icon Usain Bolt has announced a landmark $4 million donation to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), unveiling a new scholarship program in honor of his young daughter, Olympia Lightning Bolt. This philanthropic gesture by the fastest man in history marks a profound investment in the future of Black education and empowerment in the United States.

The scholarship, aptly named the Olympia Lightning Scholarship Fund, will be aimed at supporting underserved and high-achieving Black students pursuing higher education at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Bolt’s donation will help cover tuition, housing, books, and other academic-related expenses for dozens of students over the coming years.

At a press conference announcing the initiative, Bolt emphasized the importance of creating lasting opportunities for young people, especially those who face systemic barriers to education. “Education is the key to a better future, and I want to use my platform and success to open doors for others,” Bolt said. “This scholarship is not just about my daughter—it’s about giving hope and access to kids who deserve a chance to shine.”

The decision to partner with UNCF—a leading advocate for minority education and the largest provider of scholarships to Black students in the U.S.—was intentional. Bolt noted that UNCF’s long-standing history of commitment to equity in education aligns with his personal values and vision. Since its founding in 1944, UNCF has helped over half a million students graduate from college and continues to support nearly 60 HBCUs.

Michael L. Lomax, President and CEO of UNCF, expressed deep gratitude for Bolt’s unprecedented gift. “Usain Bolt is a global symbol of excellence, perseverance, and determination. His generosity will change lives and uplift communities for generations. This gift is a powerful testament to the impact one individual can have on the future of education.”

The Olympia Lightning Scholarship Fund will prioritize applicants who demonstrate academic potential, financial need, and leadership qualities. Special consideration will also be given to students interested in fields related to sports science, public health, and community development—areas close to Bolt’s heart, given his athletic background and philanthropic interests.

Beyond the financial contribution, Bolt has also pledged to remain actively involved with the program. Plans include mentorship opportunities, annual student summits, and even potential visits by Bolt to HBCU campuses to inspire and engage with scholarship recipients.

The donation represents one of the largest single contributions by an individual athlete to the UNCF and serves as a powerful reminder of the influence sports figures can wield when they choose to lead with purpose and compassion.

As the world celebrates this monumental act of giving, Bolt continues to redefine his legacy—not just as a record-breaking sprinter, but as a visionary humanitarian, father, and advocate for change. With the Olympia Lightning Scholarship Fund, Usain Bolt is making it clear: the race for equality, opportunity, and education is one worth running, and he’s setting the pace.
