Usain Bolt Donates $4 Million to UNCF for Daughter-Inspired Scholarship at Historically Black Colleges….
In a landmark gesture of philanthropy and vision, Olympic legend Usain Bolt has announced a $4 million donation to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), establishing a scholarship program in honor of his young daughter. The initiative is aimed at supporting students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), with a focus on empowering the next generation of Black leaders.
Bolt, who is widely celebrated as the fastest man in history, said the decision to create this fund was inspired by his daughter, Olympia Lightning Bolt. He emphasized the importance of education, representation, and legacy. “My daughter is my greatest inspiration,” Bolt stated. “I want her to grow up in a world where she knows she can achieve anything, and where every talented student has access to the education and opportunities they deserve, regardless of background.”
The $4 million donation will fund the “Lightning Scholars Program,” which aims to award scholarships to outstanding students demonstrating leadership, academic excellence, and a commitment to community service. The program will prioritize students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM), fields where Black representation remains disproportionately low.
Michael L. Lomax, President and CEO of UNCF, praised Bolt’s commitment. “Usain Bolt has always broken records and barriers,” said Lomax. “With this gift, he is helping to break barriers in education. His support will have a lasting impact on hundreds of young people, giving them the tools to succeed and uplift their communities.”
Beyond financial support, Bolt has expressed a desire to remain actively involved in the program. He plans to engage with students through mentorship events, virtual meetups, and motivational speeches. “I’m not just writing a check,” he said. “I want these scholars to know that I believe in them, and I want to see them win—on their terms, in their chosen fields.”
The scholarship is designed to be renewable for up to four years, covering tuition, room and board, books, and supplies. Special consideration will be given to first-generation college students and those from under-resourced communities. The first cohort of Lightning Scholars will be selected in fall 2025.
Bolt’s move is a powerful reminder of the broader influence that athletes can wield beyond their sports. At a time when conversations about racial equity and access to education are more important than ever, his donation sets a meaningful example. It also reinforces the critical role of HBCUs, which have long been pillars of opportunity and cultural empowerment in the Black community.
