Class of 2027 defensive back Khalid Rainer is already turning heads on the recruiting trail, and one program that’s made a major impression on the rising star is West Virginia. The Mountaineers extended an offer to Rainer this past week, and the young standout couldn’t be more thrilled about the opportunity.

“It was a dream come true,” Rainer said. “I’ve been working for this since I was a kid, and to have a program like West Virginia believe in me this early means everything.”

Rainer, who plays for [Insert High School Name if known], has been gaining attention for his elite speed, instinctive play, and physical presence in the secondary. At 6 feet tall with fluid hips and impressive ball skills, he projects as a versatile defensive back who can play corner or safety at the next level. His high football IQ and leadership qualities have drawn comparisons to some of the top DBs in college football.

Despite being just a sophomore, Rainer has already earned multiple Division I offers, but West Virginia’s stood out for more than just football reasons.

“They’re building something special in Morgantown,” he said. “Coach Neal Brown and the staff are all about development, both as players and as young men. When I talked to them, it wasn’t just about football — it was about academics, culture, and family.”

That family atmosphere is something Rainer values highly. Coming from a close-knit background where hard work and humility were instilled early, he’s looking for a program that shares those values. West Virginia’s tradition, blue-collar mentality, and loyal fanbase align perfectly with what Rainer is looking for.

“They play with heart,” Rainer said. “You watch their defense, and you see guys flying to the ball, playing for each other. That’s the kind of football I love.”

Though his recruitment is far from over and Rainer remains open to all programs, he’s already made it clear that West Virginia will be a top contender moving forward. He plans to visit Morgantown later this year to get a closer look at the facilities, meet more of the coaching staff in person, and take in the game-day atmosphere that’s made Milan Puskar Stadium one of the loudest in the country.

For now, Rainer is focused on continuing to develop his game and helping lead his high school team to a deep playoff run. He trains year-round, puts in extra hours in the film room, and keeps his academics strong — all in pursuit of his goal to become a Power Five impact player.

“Offers are a blessing,” Rainer said. “But I know nothing is given. I still have to prove myself every day. West Virginia gave me a chance, and I’m going to keep working to make them proud.”
