Lewis Hamilton signs with McLaren to begin historic F1 journey.

It was a big move at the time for Lewis Hamilton - and it certainly paid off for the now-seven-time world champion.

The 2026 Formula 1 season features a packed calendar, beginning with races in Australia, China, and Japan, before heading to Miami in early May. The Miami Grand Prix weekend includes qualifying on May 2 and the race on May 3, with the season continuing across iconic venues such as Monaco, Silverstone, and Monza, before concluding in Abu Dhabi on December 6.

A major historical moment in Formula 1 is being revisited today, marking 28 years since McLaren made a bold decision to sign a young Lewis Hamilton. On April 3, 1998, team boss Ron Dennis brought the then-13-year-old karting prodigy into the McLaren-Mercedes Young Driver Programme, a move that would ultimately reshape the sport.

Hamilton had already shown promise by winning the British Cadet Karting Championship, but McLarenโ€™s decision was largely based on his raw potential. Their relationship, however, began even earlier back in 1995 when a confident 10-year-old Hamilton approached Dennis at the Autosport Awards and declared his ambition to race for McLaren and become a world champion.

That early belief proved justified. Hamilton made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2007 and immediately impressed, finishing on the podium in his first nine races and narrowly missing out on the title. He returned stronger in 2008, securing his first world championship at just 23 years old.

After leaving McLaren in 2012, Hamilton joined Mercedes, where he went on to win six additional titles, matching the legendary record of Michael Schumacher with seven championships overall.

Now racing for Ferrari at the age of 41, Hamiltonโ€™s legacy is firmly established. Still, the foundation of his remarkable career can be traced back to McLarenโ€™s daring decision in 1998 to invest in a young driver from Stevenage one that would go on to become one of the most successful partnerships in motorsport history.
