Paige Bueckers part of Team USA roster for World Cup qualifier: ‘It’s really an honor’

Paige Bueckers is set to make her senior national team debut for United States women’s national basketball team during the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifying Tournament in Puerto Rico, marking another milestone in her international basketball journey.

The former UConn Huskies women’s basketball standout has previously represented the United States six times at youth national team levels between 2017 and 2019. Now, she will step onto the court for her first official appearance with the senior squad. Reflecting on the opportunity, Bueckers described the moment as deeply meaningful, noting that every stage of her career has shaped who she is and that wearing “USA” across her chest carries a sense of responsibility far beyond herself.

Bueckers joins a roster packed with established stars, including Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Chelsea Gray, Kahleah Copper, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young. The team is led by Kara Lawson, the head coach at Duke, who was appointed national team coach in September. She is supported by assistants including Natalie Nakase, Nate Tibbetts and Stephanie White.

Although the United States has already secured its place in the 2026 World Cup in Berlin after winning the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup last year, the team will still compete in this week’s qualifying tournament alongside nations attempting to earn their spots.

Ahead of the competition, Team USA held a training camp in Miami last weekend. Former UConn star Breanna Stewart attended the camp even though she was not selected for the qualifying roster, choosing instead to take part in practices as she prepares for the upcoming season.

Another prominent former Husky, Sue Bird, was also present at camp in her role as managing director for the national team. Bird now oversees roster construction for major tournaments and has already begun mentoring younger players like Bueckers, offering both advice and accountability as they grow into leadership roles.

Bueckers said her recent professional experiences including her rookie season in the WNBA and participation in the new 3-on-3 league Unrivaled have accelerated her development as a leader. She explained that stepping into professional locker rooms forced her to quickly find her voice and learn how to guide teams filled with experienced players.

Team USA enters the tournament with a remarkable track record, having captured 19 World Cup gold medals and winning the last four editions. The Americans have not lost a World Cup title since 2006, when Russia defeated them in the semifinals.

For Bueckers, the possibility of earning a place on the final World Cup roster later this year would mean joining a distinguished group of former UConn legends who thrived on the international stage, including Bird, Stewart and Diana Taurasi.

The United States will begin its qualifying campaign against Senegal on March 11, followed by games against Puerto Rico, Italy, New Zealand and Spain during the week-long tournament. All matches will be broadcast on truTV and HBO Max. 🏀🇺🇸
