Pit stop mishap hinders Mick Schumacher in oval debut.

Mick Schumacher surprised everyone with a strong qualifying performance at the IndyCar oval in Phoenix, but luck was not with him on race day

IndyCar Series rookie Mick Schumacher experienced a mix of promise and frustration during his first oval race at Phoenix Raceway.

The 26-year-old, racing for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, delivered an impressive performance in qualifying by securing fourth place. His strong pace drew praise from two-time IndyCar champion Josef Newgarden, who described Schumacher’s effort as “shockingly good.”

When the race began, Schumacher initially dropped toward the back end of the top ten as drivers battled aggressively in the opening laps. Reflecting afterward, he admitted he was surprised by how chaotic oval racing can be, noting that cars approach quickly and competitors often dive through gaps without hesitation.

However, his race unraveled during the first pit stop. A malfunctioning pit gun delayed the tire change, costing the team valuable time and ultimately leaving Schumacher a lap down. The setback pushed him to the rear of the field, making it impossible to regain the lost ground.

Instead of fighting for a top-ten finish, the remainder of the race turned into a valuable learning experience. Schumacher used the laps to better understand tire behavior on oval tracks, explaining that wear patterns shifted throughout the run, sometimes affecting the front tires more and other times the rear

He finished 18th, one lap behind race winner Newgarden. Despite the disappointing result, Schumacher chose to focus on the lessons gained from the event.

He admitted the race was not particularly enjoyable since he spent much of it away from the front, where overtaking and battling typically make the experience more exciting. Still, the Phoenix weekend highlighted both his raw speed and the adjustments required to handle the aggressive racing style typical of oval circuits.

The IndyCar season now moves on to a street circuit event scheduled for March 15 in Arlington, Texas.
