Lindsey Vonn Reveals the Deeply Personal Reason She’s Returning to the 2026 Winter Olympics (Exclusive).

After six years of retirement, the downhill ski racing champion says she's heading to Cortina for this one reason

Lindsey Vonn has shared the deeply personal motivation behind her decision to return to elite ski racing and compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics, six years after retiring from the sport.

When the 41-year-old announced her comeback in 2024, reactions ranged from excitement to curiosity. Vonn explains that advances in her health made the difference. After enduring years of severe injuries, including multiple torn ACLs, a partial titanium knee replacement dramatically changed how her body felt and performed. For the first time in years, she could ski without pain or swelling, reopening the door to a sport she loved but had been forced to leave behind.

Although retirement had brought fulfillment through her philanthropic work, Vonn admits she never felt she ended her career on her own terms. She left competition injured and frustrated, rather than strong and satisfied. The opportunity to return healthy and potentially add to her legacy proved too compelling to ignore.

Still, the Olympics themselves were not the sole driver. Vonn says she would not have pursued a comeback if the 2026 Games were not being held in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The Italian venue holds special meaning: it was where she earned her first World Cup podium in 2004 and later broke the women’s World Cup record. It was also one of the rare races both of her parents attended together.

That memory carries even greater weight now. Vonn’s mother died in 2022 after battling ALS, a loss that deeply affected her. Returning to Cortina offers a chance to honor her mother in a place tied to some of her earliest and most meaningful career moments.

At the 2026 Winter Olympics, Vonn will also make history as the oldest woman ever to compete in Alpine skiing closing her career not with regret, but with purpose, health, and personal significance.
