Class of 2026 quarterback Brodie McWhorter initially committed to West Virginia last June, choosing the Mountaineers over several top Power Four programs, including Arkansas, Auburn, Boston College, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Louisville, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oregon, TCU, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin.
However, after West Virginia parted ways with head coach Neal Brown, McWhorter decided to reopen his recruitment and decommit. New head coach Rich Rodriguez made a strong push to bring him back into the fold, visiting him in Georgia during the winter and maintaining frequent contact through phone calls. McWhorter even included WVU in his top seven last month and scheduled an official visit for early April.

Despite those efforts, McWhorter has now narrowed his choices to five schools, leaving West Virginia out of the mix. His final decision, set for May 15, will be between Auburn, Colorado, Indiana, Mississippi State, and Wisconsin.
With McWhorter no longer an option, Rodriguez and his staff will shift their focus to other quarterback targets in the 2026 class. Rodriguez confirmed on Tuesday that he has finished reviewing film on all remaining recruits on WVU’s board and will now aggressively pursue alternative options.
