Lady Vols Guard Ruby Whitehorn Arrested on Aggravated Burglary and Domestic Assault Charges…

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Ruby Whitehorn, a senior guard for the Tennessee Volunteers women’s basketball team, was arrested Friday, August 8, 2025, following a reported domestic dispute in North Knox County. According to court records and multiple media reports, Whitehorn is facing two felony charges: aggravated burglary and domestic assault. She is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, August 12.

Authorities say deputies from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office responded after receiving a domestic disturbance call around 4:15 p.m. at a residence on Earnhart Way. Inside the home, a woman reported hearing glass breaking. When she looked outside, she saw Whitehorn standing in the parking lot, immediately sparking a confrontation.

During the altercation, the woman retrieved what she believed was her cellphone and fled inside. Claiming she had her own belongings taken, Whitehorn allegedly kicked in the front door and pursued her into a bedroom, where she also kicked in the bedroom door. She reportedly smashed a glass mirror before retrieving her property and leaving the scene.

Neither Whitehorn nor the other woman sustained visible injuries, according to arrest documents. Whitehorn told officers that her actions were an attempt to retrieve her passport and cellphone. Investigators, however, identified Whitehorn as the aggressor.

Whitehorn, who averaged 11.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last season after transferring from Clemson, started in 28 of Tennessee’s 34 games and enters the upcoming 2025–26 campaign as a key returner.

The University of Tennessee acknowledged the arrest through associate director of women’s basketball, Eric Trainer, stating, “We are aware of the situation and are continuing to gather additional information.”

Whitehorn was released on bond Saturday, pending her court appearance scheduled for Tuesday.

Implications for the Program

As Whitehorn prepares for her senior season, the charges cast uncertainty over her participation and the team’s depth at a critical position. Tennessee’s head coach Kim Caldwell, in her first season at the helm, led the Lady Vols to a 22–9 regular-season record and a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Whitehorn’s offensive contributions—especially during postseason play—will be difficult to replace if legal matters sideline her.

What’s Next

With court proceedings set for Tuesday, the Volunteer community, fans, and media await further developments. Should Whitehorn face suspension or continued legal restrictions, Tennessee may need to reassess its rotation and leadership heading into the new season.
