MONACO: Jereem Richards Set for Showdown with Noah Lyles in 200m Clash at Diamond League

MONACO, July 10, 2025 – Trinidad and Tobago’s sprint ace Jereem “The Dream” Richards is gearing up for one of the sternest challenges of his 2025 campaign as he prepares to line up against American sprint titan Noah Lyles in the men’s 200m at the Monaco Diamond League on Thursday, July 11.

The race marks Lyles’ much-anticipated debut over the half-lap distance this season, and the world will be watching to see if the reigning Olympic and World Champion can pick up where he left off. The American speedster, known for his explosive finishes and unmatched confidence, is expected to bring fireworks to the Stade Louis II track. Lyles has been easing into his season, focusing on the 100m in earlier meets, but Monaco will offer the first real glimpse of his 200m form as he builds towards the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo next month.

Richards, on the other hand, enters Monaco with solid form and experience under his belt. The Commonwealth Games champion has already posted competitive times on the European circuit this summer, including a season’s best of 19.89 seconds at the Oslo Diamond League. Known for his smooth running style and powerful closing kick, the 30-year-old Caribbean star is looking to prove he can go toe-to-toe with the world’s elite once again.

“This race is going to be one of the highlights of the season for me,” said Richards ahead of the meet. “I’ve always respected Noah as a competitor, and lining up against him on a stage like Monaco brings out the best in both of us. I’ve been training for this moment.”

The field in Monaco is stacked, with rising stars and seasoned veterans set to push the pace. Canadian Aaron Brown, who took silver at the 2023 World Championships, is also expected to be in the mix, along with Britain’s Zharnel Hughes and Jamaica’s Rasheed Dwyer, making the race one of the most anticipated events of the evening.

For Lyles, who has been vocal about his ambition to challenge Usain Bolt’s world record of 19.19 seconds, the Monaco meet could be a springboard. The Monegasque track is known for its fast surface and favorable conditions, and with Lyles’ top-end speed, a sub-19.7 time is not out of the question.

Still, Richards remains focused. “I’m not thinking about the clock. I’m thinking about competing, executing, and putting my best race together,” he said. “When you’re racing guys like Noah, you can’t afford to have even a small mistake.”

As the countdown begins for one of the marquee sprint matchups of the season, fans are bracing for a thrilling 200m showdown under the lights in Monaco. Whether Richards can spoil Lyles’ season debut or the American sprinter reasserts his dominance, one thing is certain – the Dream and the showman are ready to put on a spectacle.
